Pick the right location

Most people prefer a nursing home in the area they know. Ideally it should also be within easy reach of relatives and friends who will want to visit. A nursing home should be close to local amenities such as shops and parks.

Take note of your initial impressions

First impressions are very important. You need to like the look and feel of the nursing home. Ask yourself:

  • is the atmosphere of the nursing home homely and welcoming?
  • do the communal rooms look clean?
  • do the residents look happy and well-cared for?
  • are the staff friendly both to you and the residents?

Dropping in without notice is a good way to find out what the nursing home is really like.

List your personal preferences

List your requirements and see how many of them the nursing home meets. Here are a few things to consider.

  • Does your loved one want a single room? Could they share if you want?
  • Is there a garden?
  • Can residents bring their own furniture and possessions?
  • Can residents lock their bedroom?
  • Can residents have a TV in their room?
  • Can they make drinks or snacks for themselves?
  • What is the daily routine? Can residents get up and go to bed when they want?
  • Are there any restrictions on people visiting residents in the nursing home?

Ask about the level of care

Find out what personal care is provided. For example, will your loved one be able to get help with things like washing and dressing? Can they have a bath or shower when they want? Is there specialist equipment, for example hoists, to help?

The staff-to-resident ratio of a nursing home is very important, so ask how many staff there are and how many residents.

Check out the social side

A good nursing home should provide a lively social environment for its residents, with activities including trips out for those who are physically able. If your loved one has hobbies, find out if they can pursue them in the nursing home.

Compare fees and terms

Once you find a selection of suitable nursing homes, compare the fees. Find out what they include and what they don't: for example, you may have to pay extra for personal laundry, chiropody or hairdressing. It's also a good idea to check in advance how often the fees are increased.

Ask, too, how the nursing home charges for temporary absences such as holidays or if you are in hospital.

Give it a try

When you find a nursing home you like, see if it's possible to spend a trial period there before making a long-term commitment.
