Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde went to school in County Fermanagh
Dubliners Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde both attended the Portora Royal School, an imposing Georgian building perched astride a hill outside Enniskillen, Fermanagh's largest town.
Beckett began his schooldays here in 1920, aged 14. School records show that, while Beckett excelled as an athlete, there was no real evidence of literary talent from the man whose play Waiting For Godot is now an acknowledged modern classic, and who would go on to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969.
Oscar Wilde attended the same County Fermanagh school from the age of 10, leaving when he won a scholarship to Trinity College, Dublin.
